چکیده

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of Cadmium (a heavy metal) on Catalase activity on tissues of liver, kidney and gill of freshwater air breathing Teleost fish (Heteropneustes fossilis). Catalase, a oxido-reductase enzyme play an important role in anti-oxidant defence System which protect animal from oxidative stress. Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), a medicinally important fresh water fish were exposed for 96 hours at different concentrations 0.1 mg/itr, 0.5 mg/ltr and 1.0 mg/ltr of Cd++ and observed its effects on liver, kidney, and gill tissues. Cd++ has shown increased CAT activity in all the tissues studied. It has also been observed that highest increase of the CAT activity in liver, exposed to 1.0 mg Cd++/ltr. On the other side Cd++ had no significant effect in gill . The result of these studies in fish tissues may prove that CAT enzyme could be used as a sensitive bioindicator of the antioxidant defense system.

Unusual hepatic mitochondrial arginase in an Indian air-breathing teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis: purification and characterization.

A functional urea cycle with both cytosolic (ARG I) and mitochondrial (ARG II) arginase activity is present in the liver of an ureogenic air-breathing teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis. Antibodies against mammalian ARG II showed no cross-reactivity with the H. fossilis ARG II. ARG II was purified to homogeneity from H. fossilis liver. Purified ARG II showed a native molecular mass of 96 kDa. SDS...

Unique Hepatic Cytosolic Arginase Evolved Independently in Ureogenic Freshwater Air-Breathing Teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis

Hepatic cytosolic arginase (ARG I), an enzyme of the urea cycle operating in the liver of ureotelic animals, is reported to be present in an ammoniotelic freshwater air-breathing teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis which has ureogenic potential. Antibodies available against mammalian ARG I showed no cross reactivity with the H. fossilis ARG I. We purified unique ARG I from H. fossilis liver. Purif...

Microcystin toxicity in a freshwater fish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch)

Microcystin is a toxin secreted by cyanobacteria, which are the dominant phytoplankton in eutrophic freshwater bodies. The present study reports histopathological, hematological and biochemical changes in the freshwater fish, Heteropneustes fossilis due to toxicity of microcystin. Toxic effects were observed in liver, kidney, corpuscles of Stannius, gills and gonads. Bilirubin concentration inc...

Effects of Chronic Exposure of Lead on Gonadotrophs of Pituitary in Heteropneustes Fossilis

The apparent impacts of overgrowth of population are many. It has direct impact on natural surroundings, i.e. land, water air and natural resources. Lead is found naturally in a variety of minerals. It is most ancient poison known to man. Environmental levels of lead have increased more than 1,000-fold over the past three centuries as a result of human activity. Leafy fresh vegetables grown in ...

Effect of Bisphenol A on certain Hematological Parameters of Heteropneustes fossilis, Bloch

Effect of Bisphenol A on the hematological parameters total RBC count, total WBC count and hemoglobin content was assessed in Heteropneustes fossilis caught from wild. Behavioural changes were also monitored. It was found that 72 hour exposure of BPA at a concentration of 0.1g/L has lowered total RBC count and increased WBC count. Hemoglobin concentration in the blood also decreased exposure to...
